December 30, 2020 - Duquesne Offers Flexible Residency Plan Again for Spring 2021
As we prepare to return to on campus life and begin classes on January 21, Duquesne is offering the Flexible Residency plan again for the Spring 2021 semester. Just as it did in the fall semester, the Flexible Residency plan offers students who are registered for a University-owned residence on campus the option to adjust when they will arrive or depart, in consideration of their particular health needs or concerns, as well as travel considerations. In simplest terms, a student can delay arrival or decide to leave prior to the end of the semester and have the charges for room and board—as well as the room grant—adjusted proportionately.
If you plan to use the Flexible Residency plan to delay arrival for on-campus housing, please let the Office of Residence Life know at firstname.lastname@example.org by Thursday, January 7, 2021. If you do not notify the University, your meal plan and room charges will start as they typically do at the beginning of the semester. Please note that students with housing agreements in Brottier Hall are not eligible, as Brottier Hall is not a University-owned property.
Students must notify Residence Life of their intended week and date of return at least one week prior to the week they plan to begin residency in a Duquesne-owned residence. The University realizes that students may want to delay their return but still be uncertain for how long they will delay their arrival. Students are therefore required to take two steps: 1) inform Duquesne of any intent to use the Flexible Residency plan, and 2) tell the University the date of their arrival, once that is known.
Students with Duquesne housing agreements wishing to delay their arrival or depart prior to the semester’s end may do so by week. This one-week notice provides staff time to activate a student’s ID card access, sanitize the space, prepare furnishings and (as applicable) inform and allow a roommate time to organize.
To illustrate with an example, those delaying arrival may state they are returning for week 3 of the semester, thus arriving on Sunday, January 31. Students who are delaying will move into their residence on the Sunday of the week they choose to return. If a student is unable to arrive until a later day in that week, their room-and-board charges will begin on the previous Sunday.
Similarly, students departing prior to the end of the semester will be charged through the Saturday of the last week they are in residence and must move out of the residence by that Saturday as well. If they choose to leave on the Wednesday of the week, for instance, they will be charged for the entire week. Changes to room charges and corresponding changes to room grants will appear as a credit to the original charge. Credits are illustrated at duq.edu/room-credit and duq.edu/reduction-room-grants.
For students who may want to consider departing before the semester ends, we recognize that this decision and the selection of a departure date may occur later.
The percentage of credit applied to students with meal plans is based on unused meal swipes. Therefore, credits will be calculated on an individual student basis. When the University processes these housing and meal plan credits, they will appear as adjustments to an individual’s student account.
